Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III and Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force
James Cody told airmen at the 28th Bomb Wing here yesterday that they need to
use common sense as they go about their duties.“No one knows your
jobs better than you do,” the general told about 1,000 airmen gathered in the
bases Pride Hanger today. “You are the experts in your missions.”Common sense would dictate that if airmen run across
something in their duties that doesnt make sense, then they should suggest
better ways to do them, Welsh said. “If its a policy, or a guideline, or an
[Air Force Instruction], or a reporting requirement, and you cant figure out
why it makes sense to be doing it, then maybe we shouldnt be doing it,” the
general said. “If it doesnt match common sense then I dont care what it says
in the AFI, lets talk about it.”There is enough to do, the general said, without blindly
following guidelines or instructions that may have been in place for more than
20 years. Airmen need to identify things that dont make sense and bring them
to supervisors and commanders.Supervisors and commanders owe these young airmen the
respect and courtesy to listen, Welsh said. “When your young airmen or NCOs or
young officers come to you and say, I dont understand why we are doing things
this way, pay attention,” the general said.“Our young NCOs and officers are bright, they are savvy,
they are just better,” he said. “Listen to what they have to say. If what they
say makes common sense, even if it disagrees with an AFI, lets look at the AFI
and change it.”Welsh stressed that all airmen must take ownership of this
responsibility. “Dont be afraid to speak up,” he told the airmen.Welsh talked about the 30-day Every Dollar Counts campaign
that the Air Force held earlier this year. “We did that campaign so I could ask
this question: Why over 30 days did 11,000 airmen have to go to a website to
offer a good idea?” he asked. “We launched the campaign to see if there were
ideas out there, where did they come from, who they relate to and why werent
they coming out in discussions.”A few of the ideas were just bad ideas, the general said. “A
whole lot of them were good ideas,” he said. “A huge percentage of them are
wing-level and below.”These are ideas that should bubble up from the wings, but
airmen dont feel comfortable putting them forward, Welsh said. “They dont
think their supervisors or next level supervisors want them to make waves or
their commanders will listen to them,” he said.Welsh again urged every airman to feel free to put forward
ideas and every supervisor and commander to listen. “We should encourage the
input,” he said. “Where there is a good idea we need to jump all over it. And
your wing commander can make these decisions. He can decide what makes sense
and if he decides it makes more sense your way, then he has the authority to
tell you guys to change it.”The general told the airmen that he will practice what he
preaches: he has told the Air Staff in the Pentagon to include the common sense
test in every decision they make.

The Day After and Happy Hour at the Local Winery!

The Day After and Happy Hour at the Local Winery!

It got pretty cold down here in the country last night. Upper 20's I think it was but we slept nice and warm under our electric blanket WITH a heating pad for extra warmth!

We kept the small electric heater on low all night. This morning the sun warmed things up nicely.Maggie found her new favorite spot to sit!She used to fall down behind the couch - and then she couldn't get out. This was last year when we were living in the camper. It happened more than once! We would hear her from UNDER the couch and have to rescue her!
Louis Dean spent the morning fishing while I stayed in the camper to read.
The ranch has had some rain lately!

Normally this is NOT a pond!
This afternoon we had our THIRD Thanksgiving Feast! My favorite dish today was Sherry's black eyed peas!Next year they are going to grow a whole FIELD of them down here!We all sat around after we ate and visited! This is what makes a holiday - visiting with each other.Dean has so many funny stories to tell and we sat and talked and laughed and laughed!Late in the afternoon we freshened up and headed out to our evening's entertainment!
Happy Hour with live music at the local winery here tonight. My handsome step son and his lovely wife enjoying a delicious glass of wine - made from grapes right there in his neighborhood!Tehuacana Creek Vineyards is on Highway 6.It is named after the Indian tribe who used to live in the area. You pronounce the name - "to-walk-in-a-creek."
We had a wonderful evening!

Our grandson, Robert, is SUCH a good sport! He was bored out of his mind but you couldn't tell!!

Our two wines of choice! The Mulsum is a 2000 year old recipe!
There was live music and we had a BALL!!

"Mulsum - This is our most unique wine and our number one seller since its release on Valentines Day 2008. This is the wine the ancient Romans used to drink before they sat down for their feasts. It is white wine sweetened with honey. They called it Mulsum which in latin means "mixture". We have recreated it exactly the way it tasted to the Romans using a 2,000 years old recipe. It is a sweet wine, but because it is sweetened with honey and not sugar it is not overly sweet. Instead it has a natural roundness in the mouth with all the delicate fragrances of honey. This is a wine you can sip, slightly chilled, on any occasion or enjoy with hot ethnic dishes as the honey gently coats the spicy flavors. But beware, just like the Romans you are apt to end up with empty glasses quickly. This is the kind of wine that becomes the talk of the evening..."

Notice the white cup? It is Glogg!
This is a very special wine which is meant to be served warm.It is flavored with cinnamon, cloves and other spices and is perfect for a cold winter's night!I bought TWO bottles! One for my annual Ladies Christmas Tea on December 17th and another for the family gathering on Christmas Eve!My favorite moment of the evening? When I asked the winery owner (pictured on the left ) what wine HE was drinking!Chardonnay from a BOX!!I LOVE that!!!He said if he drank HIS wine he would be drinking up his profits!
We ended this day with a campfire!Another perfect day from out here on the range!!!

Middle School Preview Marks Tip Off of Basketball Season

Middle School Preview Marks Tip Off of Basketball Season

Bwerwick vs Westeville Genoa
For
the last 8 years, one of the sure signs that the Columbus City League middle
school season is just around the corner is the tip off of the annual Africentric Early College Middle School Boys
Basketball Preview. Friday night, approximately
300 fans packed the Africentric High School gym to see 10 Columbus-area middle
schools debut their 2013/2014 squads. Africentric Head Coach Mike Bates inherited
the event from a rival high school, and has continued to provide a competitive
forum for Columbus middle school basketball.
In terms of the format, 10 teams participated in the event, which
included two, 6-minute halves. The following were the matchups on Friday: Starling vs Indianola K-8; KIPP Academy vs.
Boys City Preps; Johnson Park vs. Westerville Genoa (7th); Berwick K-8 vs.
Westerville Genoa (8th); and Africentric vs. Columbus Arts Tech. The
opening game featured a matchup between Starling and Indianola. Indianola would
take an 11-8 lead into the break and would go on to collect the win. Although there was no elite talent on either
team, Indianolas Ricardo Volley (54
PG), an 8th grader, led all scorers with 8 points.

Ty Wiley Excited the Crowd
Game
#2 pitted KIPP Academy against Boys City Prep. Very early, Boys City Preps was
clearly the team to beat based on their length, plus the fact their roster
included one of the top 8th grade point guards in the state in Ty Wiley (57 PG). The
more talented Boys City Preps led at halftime 13-7 and by the time the horn
sounded on the game, Preps had secured the 25-14 win. His shot was off and he only scored 3 points,
but Wiley was clearly the most talented player on the court. On a couple
occasions Wiley excited the crowd with his tight handle, dribble moves and his
ability to drop dimes to open teammates. Although Wiley was the only elite
player in the game, there were several other prospects that could emerge down
the road. Keep an eye on Stanley
Williams (63 C). Williams led with a game-high 6 points, and is more
potential than production right now, but at 63 in the 8th grade, he
could end up being a good one in a couple years. Dennis Peterson (60 WF), Naelle
Simmons (60 C 7th grader), Jordan
Barrett (511 WF), Tyrique Tribble
(510 WF) and Antonio Green (53 PG)
could all turn out to be quality players going forward. In
the third game of the night, Johnson Park blew by Westerville Genoa 30-5. There is not much to say about this one as
the game was never in doubt. A couple of players to watch include: Chernor Bah (61 C) and Keon Dooley (56 PG/SG). Bah finished
with 7 points and Dooley added 5.

Jeremiah Francis-5'11 PG
The
4th game on the slate was a Berwick Alterative vs Westerville Genoa
matchup. Although Westerville was surprisingly competitive early, Berwick would
lead at the break 14-8, and would later extend the lead to 26-12 as time ran
out. Berwick was led by Jeremiah Francis
(511 PG), arguably the top floor general in the state in the class of
2019. Francis did not disappoint as he
hit floaters, dropped dimes and bullied his way to a game-high 9 points. Every
time I attend an event I hope to discover fresh new talent that I can introduce
to our readers. Well, Westervilles Solomon
Pierre-Louis (61 WF) is a name to remember! Pierre-Louis has significant upside
potential with his size, skill set and athleticism. The kid has good length,
can play multiple positions, pushes the ball on the break and passes well for
his size. He was really more of a point forward on Friday. Im not sure anybody
know about this kid, but I trust that AAU coaches will be blowing up his phone
soon. Also keep an eye out for Isaiah
Hairston (61 WF). The brother of Northlands Ty Hairston, Isaiah has more
length at this point and could develop into something special with continued growth
and development.

Solomon Pierre-Louis-6'1 WF Westerville
The
finale was not much of a game, as Columbus Arts Tech trounced Africentric
24-7. The only notable aspect of this game was the play of Jabohe Garcia (510 SG). Garcia, only a 7th grader,
could be a good prospect in the future. Blessed with good length for his
position, ball skills and vision, Garcia has a ton of potential. Although
there was not a ton of individual talent or many household names at this event,
there were a number of intriguing prospects who could emerge as players in a
couple of years. Many of the kids I featured in this recap are very raw, but with
these types of players, once they get to high school, they often turn out to be
solid college prospects. Congratulations to Coach Mike Bates and his staff for
hosting a nice event.Pictured Below: Jabohe Garcia, Ricardo Volley Chernor Bah

Instruments

Instruments

My violin broke, at my birthday I want a new violin. I mean my fiddle. I like a fiddle because it has strings. And because it has a handle at the back so that you can hold it without dropping it and breaking it and messing up the strings. I'm going to learn "A Smile on my Face."

I am going to get instruments at my birthday, and maybe some at Christmas. I also want a guitar, like a dulcimer, one that you play laying down. I think I would like a banjo too. And maybe a co-net (clarinet) it's a whistle and it is black or maybe a trumpet. Well, I can't play them all at once, so I'll keep them where no bad guys can get them, and I'll set one down when I get done, somewhere safe, and then get another one.

I play instruments and so does the guys on my music cd (that would be Alison Krauss and Union Station). Grumps plays a guitar and he has a banjo. I want him to play it for me, so I can see how it sounds, cause I don't have one. He has the bestest banjo I've never seen. Uncle Matthew plays a piano. I like it because all you need is your fingers for it, and you don't even have to hold it. Brother Jonathan has a guitar and a piano.

Maybe after I have enough birthdays to get all my instruments I will get a punching bag next like Captain America.Make a video - it's fun, easy and free!www.onetruemedia.com

Favorite Homeschooling Resources Part 3 - What We Believe Series

Favorite Homeschooling Resources Part 3 - What We Believe Series

For many years I struggled with what we could use for morning devotions. Yes, we do read the Bible every morning and this year Grace is reading through the New Testament on her own. This month she is almost finished wit the book of John. I have always liked to have something we could read aloud and share together to get the day rolling on a positive note. The past year and a half we have used theWhat We Believe Seriesfrom Apologia. We absolutely love this series. There are four books in the series and we are currently on Book 3. Almost finished to be exact. I will be so bummed when we finished the series and have to look for something else to use during devotion time.

Volume 1 is Who is God and Can I Really Know Him
Volume 2 is Who Am I and What Am I Doing Here
Volume 3 is Who is My Neighbor and Why Does He Need Me
Volume 4 is What On Earth Can I Do

Photo Credit to Apologia WebsiteThe above photo is the volume we are about to finish. Each book is set up the same with sections of The Big Idea, What You Will Do, Short Story, Think About It, Words You Need to Know, Hid It In Your Heart, Integrated Learning, What Should I do, Prayer, Encounters with Jesus, Take a Closer Look, and House of Truth. Grace's is favorite part is always the short story. This volume's short story has to do with a family living through the Civil War. In this volume they also started adding Encounters with Jesus which happens to be one of my favorite parts. In Encounters the author takes scripture from the Bible about Jesus and writes it into story format to make you feel, hear, and see everything that the person who met Jesus experienced. The lessons covered in this volume are:Does Anyone Really Need MeHow Can I Make a DifferenceWho Is My NeighborWhy Did God Make FamiliesWhat Can I Do For My CountryWhy Can't We All Just Get AlongWho Is God's FamilyWhy Does The Church Need MeAll of the volumes in the What We Believe Series are set up to teach children a Christian worldview. I have found this series to be invaluable and we truly love reading from it each morning. There are other resources you can purchase to enhance the experience of using this series like a notebooking journal, coloring book, and audio cd. We found, especially since Grace is older, that simply reading through the book is best for us. Many, many people in the homschooling community are using the What We Believe Series. I just wanted to highlight one of the products we use in our home for daily devotions. This is not a review just simply my opinion about an awesome product that you might be interested in checking out.

Cisco The Fourth Horseman Reports First Quarter 2014

Cisco The Fourth Horseman Reports First Quarter 2014

In Cisco's current 10-K, we note that for the period 7/2008-7/2013, an indexed investment returned an average annual return of 7.4%, trailing both the Standard and PoorsTechnology Index (up 18% p.a.) and the Standard and PoorsIndex (up 16.5%) by a wide margin.

Despite the under performance, Cisco's balance sheet is impressive. For the fiscal year ended 7-2013, free cash flow was $11.7 billion, for the fiscal year ended 7-2012 FCF was $10.4 billion, and for the fiscal year ended 7-2011 FCF was $8.9 billion.

Despite its long history of acquisitions, which have become fewer in number and larger, Cisco has a tangible book value of about $6.24 even after stripping out goodwill and intangible assets. The company recently closed on the $2.7 billion acquisition of Sourcefire, a leading innovator in the cyber security field. In one of their slide presentations about the acquisition, Cisco talks about the importance of compatible corporate cultures when considering a target. This acquisition is very consistent with CEO John Chambers' remarks on the FY14 1Qtr conference call where he said the number one concern of Cisco's top 95 global IT CIOs was IT security.

While acknowledging the maturity and scale of the current Cisco, the company returned $3.3 billion in dividends to shareholders in the fiscal year ended 7-2013, more than double the $1.5 billion returned to shareholders through dividends in the fiscal year ended 7-2012.

So, a company with a fortress balance sheet and high returns has dramatically under performed its peers and the broad market. Let's look at the recently announced FY 14: 1Q.

Revenue of $12.1 billion increased 2% yr/yr. $9.4 billion revenue came from selling products, and $2.7 billion came from services. Subsequent line items are non-GAAP numbers. Cisco's consolidated gross margin is an extraordinary 63%, and that rate increased by 30 basis points over the prior-year period. Product gross margin was 62% and increased 50 basis points, while services generated a 67% gross margin, which also increased 30 basis points over the prior-year period.

Operating expenses were 33.7% of revenue, down 110 basis points yr/yr reflecting the significant worldwide reduction-in-force throughout the enterprise. Operating income was an extraordinary 29.3% of revenue, up 140 basis points over the prior-year period. Net income of $2.9 billion reflected a margin of 23.7% and income grew 12% yr/yr on a non-GAAP basis. Diluted EPS of $0.53 increased 10% yr/yr.

During the quarter, the company repurchased 84 million common shares at an average price of $23.65 and returned $2 billion to shareholders. The company also paid dividends of $914 million.

As of the fiscal year ending 7-2013, the company had 75,049 employees. 26,416 worked in research and development. 25,938 employees worked in sales and marketing, a number which clearly reflects the importance of consultative selling in the corporate culture. 7,546 employees worldwide were in administrative positions. Research and development expenditures were about $6 billion in the last full fiscal year.

Analyst questions and concerns after the management presentations centered on the forward guidance for the next quarter. One analyst said that he was "floored by the guidance." Management suggested that revenues for the current quarter might be down as much as 11% sequentially. While this seemed like a discontinuous change, the explanations were fairly clear.

The first quarter ended with a shortfall in bookings versus sales forecasts in the last two or three weeks of the quarter, and the backlog going into the second quarter was correspondingly low. Combined, these two factors comprise somewhat more than a $1 billion shortfall in the current quarter.

Their core set top box market will decline by about 4-5% in the next two quarters, as a technology transition continues to take place. Emerging markets, including China, are and will continue to be very challenging. Each of Cisco's top ten emerging market countries missed their sales forecasts for the first quarter. The top five markets had yr/yr sales declines of 18-30%.

The CEO noted that Cisco had relied too much on core switching and routing product sales for many years, without being ahead of technical and engineering developments that would require new platforms for the high end customers. He said that it took 4-5 years to fix this oversight, and it is done or their two core product segments. Routing and switching are in the midst of major product line transitions.

The worry is that consolidated gross margins will decline, and they most likely will. On a GAAP basis, consolidated gross margins have declined about 800 basis points from 2008-2013, the period of the stock price under performance.

In the meantime, the company's work force has been right sized to work with significant margin pressure, if it comes. The substantial dividend increase and the commitment to share buybacks would suggest a company that should generate substantial free cash flows. In fact, the company just announced an additional share repurchase authority of $15 billion.

Cisco's goal is to become the number one provider to its top global corporate customers. It has the sales organization and culture and the balance sheet to make this happen. Their acquisitions and new product platform launches seem to be in the right direction for their customers. Their guidance for long-term revenue growth is 5-7%, which is above the "GDP rates" suggested by HP. If this happens alongside some operating leverage, then the stock would appear to be undervalued, given its capability of producing prodigious cash flows.
